Text, Post digital, Systems Approach
I produced a typeset scroll of Immanuel Kant’s “Answering the Question: What Is Enlightenment?” I aimed to recontextualise Kant’s discussion through a digital lens, positioning the computer as the “Unenlightened” featured in the text. I repurposed the AI educational coding software Sketch2Code which converts images of a line of code into functioning HTML. This system generated the type structure and affected columns, line lengths, repeating paragraphs and errors.
Accompanying this I created a system of glyphs combining Blackletter styling with monospaced coding fonts creating a variable font that morphed as you read the text. I speculated this to be exhibited on the digital displays outside the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence.
